| Oferta de trabajo para hacer tesis doctoral
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student in environmental chemistry for the project „Formation of transformation products during oxidative treatment of drinking water and wastewater“
The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) is currently suggesting to implement an advanced treatment step at around 100 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Switzerland to remove micropollutants from wastewater. This is based on a national project that evaluated the input of micropollutants from municipal WWTPs to receiving waters. Ozonation and powdered activated carbon were shown to be the most suitable technical options for the removal of a broad variety of these micropollutants. Still, micropollutants are not fully mineralized during ozonation but transformation products are formed. Depending on their reactivity with ozone, these transformation products possess more or less similar structures as the parent compounds. The aim of this PhD research project is to systematically assess possible reaction pathways and to develop a web-based model for the prediction of transformation products that can form from micropollutants during ozonation of drinking water or wastewater. The UM-PPS model which is currently applied in the prediction of biotransformation products of micropollutants (http://umbbd.msi.umn.edu/predict/) will be used as a basis to set-up a chemical model. Known reaction mechanisms will be compiled, and then coupled with kinetic parameters. To assess unknown reaction mechanisms, laboratory-based experiments will be carried out, possibly in combination with quantum mechanical calculations. The web-based model will be developed for use in science and water treatment practice to predict transformation products of emerging organic micropollutants during oxidative water treatment. The research project, which will be conducted at ETH Lausanne (EPFL) in close collaboration with Eawag, offers an excellent opportunity to study the basic chemistry of oxidation processes with a special focus on reactions of ozone with organic micropollutants. In addition, theoretical aspects can be connected in an ideal way with laboratory experiments. A PhD degree will be gained from EPFL within 3 - 4 years. Immediate start of work or by agreement. The ideal candidate holds a master or diploma in chemistry, geo-ecology or environmental sciences. Special Issue on Fullerene-Related Nanocarbons and Their Applications
Call for Papers
The discovery of the fullerene (C60) in 1985 has spurred the subsequent discoveries of a number of related novel forms of carbon found existing at the nanometer scale. These various nanocarbons are related one another in structure, providing an interesting spectrum of variants which display an array of unique properties, for very distinct applications.
From the vast amount of research that has been carried out over the last two decades, it is now apparent that some of these nanocarbons, notably, nanotubes, nanoparticles, and nanowires, possess unique properties, with the potential to add great value to industrial applications. It is expected that studies on these nanomaterials and related technologies will have huge impacts on the future nanotechnology and contribute significantly to economy and society. Since the research is at the crossroads between different technologies and disciplines involving materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, and nanotechnology, its implementation will greatly benefit new, high-tech industries and also help the transformation of traditional carbon-based industries from a resource-intensive to a knowledge-intensive base. However, major challenges exist in the research area, which aremainly associated with providing answers to key questions such as how to control the novel nanostructures of the materials, how to produce them in commercial quantities and at relatively low cost, and how to apply them by specific requirements.
The main focus of this special issue will be on the nanocarbons of displaying fullerene-related nanostructures, which may cover nanoparticles, nanowires, nanosheets, nanotubes and fullerene-based nanopolymers. Reports and reviews are encouraged to demonstrate why the materials are fundamentally interesting in either structure or property, or practically important for applications. This special issue will serve as an international forum for researchers to communicate the most recent advances in relevant fields.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
• Nanocarbons with novel structures and properties
• New synthetic approaches to the materials and their hybrid nanostructures
• Theoretical and experimental studies on the reaction kinetics for providing new insights into growth mechanisms
• Phenomena related to quantum size effect or the low dimensionality of nanocarbons
• New instruments or methods for characterising the materials
• Nanocarbons for applications in catalysis, energy harvesting and storage, green chemistry, and nanotechnology
• Nanocarbon-related health and safety studies

| Proposition of Post-Doctoral position in Centre de Recherche sur la Matière Divisée (CRMD), Orléans, France
Effect of components on the performance of high energy asymmetric capacitors
Nowadays, improving the energy efficiency of systems is an important objective for reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Electrochemical energy storage systems are able to take an important part in this strategy, allowing lost energy to be recovered and further delivered on demand. Two types of electrochemical energy storage devices are available: accumulators and supercapacitors. Accumulators have a high energy density but a low power density, whereas supercapacitors are able to deliver a high power, but their energy density is relatively low.
The main objective of this project, in collaboration between CRMD and an industrial partner, is to optimize the performance of an asymmetric supercapacitor involving two carbon electrodes with different storage properties in organic solution. The possibility of obtaining a high energy density with such a concept has been already demonstrated by the CRMD group. However, in order to up-scale the system for being implemented in the market, the power density and the cycle life must be increased. In this project, such objectives will be achieved by : i) optimizing the composition of the positive and the negative electrode for obtaining the highest conductivity; ii) performing supercapacitors in a suitable electrolyte compatible with both electrodes; iii) designing a separator playing the role of a good electrolyte reservoir.
In this project, the Post-Doctoral fellow will optimise the composition of carbon based electrodes and the designing of the supercapacitor cells. Various physico-chemical and electrochemical methods will be used for characterizing the structure and nanotexture of the carbon electrodes. The electrodes will be implemented in laboratory test supercapacitors (coffee-bag cells) with different kinds of membrane separators and electrolytes. The performances will be estimated by galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. The optimised configurations will be further implemented in supercapacitor prototypes.
This work programme is recommended for a candidate specialized in electrochemistry and materials science. The multi-disciplinary approach of this work will allow the fellow to develop various competencies as well in fundamental science and in industrial applications.
